WELCOME TO OUR FUTURE

FREEWHEEL MISSION GEAR IS JUST GETTING STARTED.

For a couple months now, it’s been full-throttle around here - becoming sole owner, moving the business across the country, setting up our temporary and new workshops, taking on and finishing some big jobs. And, it turns out, one more project that I kept under wraps until last week - Freewheel Mission Gear!

You may wonder why I’m changing names with years of history and recognition. Frankly, it’s a risk! But “Bedrock Bags” pretty much limits the business to, well, bags - and it’s only known in the bikepacking world. (Nightfall Overland has an even more niche audience!) And while bikepacking bags are the current majority of our offerings, that’s not all we build, nor all I’d like to build moving forward. I wanted to create a brand that allows for anything - even ideas outside of soft goods. What better time to change things than now, when I’m rebuilding from the bottom up anyway?

I’ve used the name ‘Freewheel’ on various projects since about 2008. It both nods to my lifelong bike obsession and encapsulates an attitude - one of openness, curiosity, and big horizons. As for ‘Mission Gear’ - I’m mission-oriented, and I like gear that’s created for a purpose. Put it all together: Freewheel Mission Gear - Refined gear for your mission. Big or small, mundane or transcendent, FMG makes gear that helps you on your mission.

Take a look around the new site. You’ll see some familiar things, and some new things. I’m launching with three refined, re-designed bicycle products: New Custom Frame Bags (orders are open again!), the SL Panniers, and the Delta Handlebar Bag. All three are large refinements and improvements of existing products we’ve been building for a while; there are many changes I wanted to make. I’ve also relaunched several former Nightfall Overland products - magnetic, insulated window shades for Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, and RAM Promaster vans.

Our ordering process is different now. It’s not realistic for my small crew to keep five colors of two dozen products in stock all the time. So, we’re moving to a hybrid sales model, where you can buy In-Stock items as they show up (we’ll build some of these ASAP!), or Build-to-Spec items if you want a specific color or aren’t in a rush. We’re also offering three different build levels/price points on many items. All items are built by us with precision and care, but if your budget is slim you can purchase feature-trimmed Basic versions of our gear. If you want the same thing we’d build for ourselves, you can spring for the Premium builds. Or, Standard is a nice compromise between budget and features.

Moving forward, I’ll be working on refining existing products for inclusion under the Freewheel Mission Gear label. And once things calm down, I’ll be working on new products - and new categories - as well! Stay tuned, because things are about to get interesting. Thanks for being here - I appreciate all your support.
